How long should you ventilate for?

To save unnecessary heating costs, it is important in winter to keep the ventilation time as short as possible. Nevertheless, it is essential to ensure that the room air is completely exchanged.

In winter, depending on the size of a room, about 5 minutes are needed to ventilate it. Sufficient ventilation time is often underestimated - especially when it is cold outside. In spring and autumn, the temperature difference between inside and outside is smaller, so 10 to 20 minutes should be planned here. The warmer it is outside, the longer the ventilation time. In midsummer, the ideal ventilation time is about 25 minutes.

GOOD TO KNOW: Tilted windows are counterproductive for shock ventilation, as it is difficult to achieve a complete exchange of room air and the energy loss would be many times higher.

There are rooms in which there is generally more moisture. These are mainly the bathroom and the kitchen. Here you must pay particular attention to increased and regular ventilation. Ideal ventilation of damp rooms:

Damp surfaces: If mirrors or windows are fogged up on the inside, it is a sign that the humidity in the room is much too high, so ventilate immediately.
Cooking: When cooking, and especially afterwards, open the window and ventilate completely so that the water vapour that has formed can escape and not condense on walls and cupboards. Ventilation also counteracts unpleasant cooking smells.
Bathing and showering: Keep the bathroom door closed while bathing or showering so that the moisture cannot spread to the rest of the house. If available, switch on the room ventilation. After washing, remove misted-up surfaces and wipe dry. Then ventilate the bathroom intensively.
Laundry drying and ironing: When drying the laundry, it releases moisture into the room air and water vapour is also produced when ironing. It is therefore essential to ensure that the room is adequately ventilated.
